Bayview Rise Pier 92
Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan
On the grain elevator and silos of Port Pier 92 at the north entry to San Francisco’s Bayview Neighborhood is an illuminated mural called Bayveiw Rise, visible from surrounding freeways and hills. The mural was funded and commissioned by the Port of San Francisco and installed by R.B. Morris III, with lighting installation by Legend Theatrical. The project’s mission is to save and re-purpose historic and abandoned buildings in the area. (Street art sf)
The imagery of the Bayveiw mural is rooted in its historic and future conditions of Bayview Hunters Point, with a focus on elements that float, fly, grow, and rise. Images appear and move in and out of the mural. Changing patterns of light cause the images to overlap, combine, and juxtapose in a triangular matrix so that they appear to metamorphose. (haddad-drugan) Some images include that of the San Fransico Bay, surrounding marshlands, along with a pattern inspired by native islais cherry plants overlaid onto a field of shorebirds rising from the water, with a heron flying above, an allusion to the Heron’s Head Park nearby where the Port has an environmental restoration project. An image of a cow refers to the historic Buchertown, once located in the Port. Images of red balloons appearing to float form the mural into the sky are inspired by 96-year old community activist Essie Webb, who compared Hunters Point to a balloon waiting to inflate and rise. (haddad-drugan) The mural’s geometric patterns and interaction of color and light is a metaphor for the neighborhood’s ever-changing community, and its past, present, and future.
